Billy Currington was born on November 19, 1973. He was raised in the small town of Rincon, Georgia, about 30 minutes from Savannah (Located in: Effingham County; Population around 4,300 people (*2000 Population Census)).
At the age of 1 1/2 years his mother married a man by the name of Larry Currington. A man who taught Billy, the all to familiar, hard lessons in life about alcohol and what it does to families.
“He’d get drunk and a little crazy,” Currington says. “He eventually died of drinking and cancer.” (* Quote taken from an interview with HipOnline.com - read full interview).
As fate would have it Larry taught Billy about Country Music.
“He’d play Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, The Statler Brothers, Kenny Rogers, all those guys. I loved it, and I’d play those myself when he wasn’t around,” Currington says. “I really loved Alabama. I remember taking a radio in the bathroom and singing like I was Randy Owen. I guess I developed a strong passion for wanting to be a singer in high school. It was in the 9th or 10th grade when I got turned on to Keith Whitley. I’d buy those tapes and sing those songs just like he did. And of course, George Strait came along and I wanted to be like that, too.” (* Quote taken from an interview with HipOnline.com - read full article).
When Billy was a Junior in High School he was introduced to gospel music by a friend who took him to her father's church one day. Here he was introduced to southern gospel music with a touch of country added to it. Billy liked what he heard and complimented the preacher on the music. The preacher heard Billy sing and requested he sing at the following Sunday Service. Over time the preacher was so impressed with Billy and his voice he eventually drove Billy to Nashville, Tennessee to audition at the Opryland USA theme park. He didn't make it but that didn't bother Billy. He knew he was going back to Nashville one day.
Shortly after High School, Billy moved to Nashville to pursue his career in music. His first stay in Nashville didn't last long, but he returned after paying his dues at a bar in Georgia. When Billy went back to Nashville, he landed a lucrative job for a concrete company working 16 hours a day and played gigs at night. He was encouraged by a friend in the music industry to give his job up to concentrate more on his music. So Billy did and worked part-time as a personal trainer while he honed his music and followed his dream.
He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee. He has two brothers and four sisters. He is single and has no children.
Billy released his debut album in 2003 featuring the powerful, heart felt top ten hit Walk A Little Straighter (which he wrote the chorus at age 12) and the top 5 smash I Got A Feelin.
His career has been helped along by the pop duet, Party For Two, in 2004, which he sang with Shania Twain. Billy caught the eye of Shania Twain. The superstar personally called to invite him to join her on the duet "Party For Two." That phone call Billy is reported as saying, "changed my life." The next thing Billy knew, he was on a flight to Europe to record and to shoot a video with Shania Twain and her husband, legendary music producer Robert "Mutt" Lange.
In 2005 Billy released the first single from his second studio album, Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right which reached the #1 Spot in the Country Chart.
Billy Currington's sophomore album Doin’ Somethin’ Right in February 2006 went Gold (500,000 sales), and in May 2007 it exceeded one million units in sales. Giving Billy him his first R.I.A.A. (Recording Industry Association of America) platinum certification.
