Artist: Billy Currington
Album: Little Bit Of Everything (2008)
|
After a career threatening voice ailment Billy Currington is definitely back with his new CD Little Bit of Everything. He's in better vocal form than I have ever heard with his rich, sultry, velvet smooth, honey laden, and baritone voice. This collection of eleven new songs, 5 of which were co-written by Billy, with the rest coming from some A-list writers like Tony Martin, Brett Beavers, and Mark Nesler, to name a few, has the stuff to take him to the top. This album takes you over several genre styles, from blues, to R&B, soul, and southern edged country.
The album kicks off with a summer number that makes you long to go to the beach and lead a stress free life of "Swimmin In Sunshine." After a playful first song Billy takes on a philosophical side and talks about, "Life, Love, and the Meaning Of". The mid-tempo song, "Every Reason Not To Go", is an intoxicatingly engaging song that talks about a man who is desperate for his woman not to leave him. While his amorous, R&B, smooth side shows up in, "Don't".
"People Are Crazy" a briskly strummed country-rock song that has a simple but effective melody. It tells a simple story about a young man talking to an old man in a bar and his take on life, which is summed up in one ear pleasing melody, "God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy." I don't know about you but I have never heard a truer line. This song goes a long way to showing what great country music is all about with the always present steel guitar, traditional two step bass lick, and Billy's smooth, spot on baritone vocals. Kudos to you, Billy, for this fantastic song!
Then Billy leads us to an infectious tune called, "Everything" with its appealing lyrics and melody, this song will stay in your head long after you have heard it. After, I heard this song for the first time I caught myself singing the melody all day long and couldn't wait to hear it again.
"Walk On" has a certain great feel to it with the grooving R&B rhythm and its bluesy vocals. "No One Has Eyes Like You," is a romantic uncluttered song that showcases Billy's song-crafting with this sweet and sincere ballad.
This leads me to my favorite song on this album, "That's How Country Boys Roll". A great tribute to the good ole southern boys with a rockin' beat, its coy lyrics, and the invigorating guitar licks. "I Shall Return" is an island song that beats Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett at their own game with Billy leading the way with his strong but supple voice in this melodic tune.
The album ends with a song written by a first time songwriter by the name of Bonnie Swayze. "Heal Me" is a love song that has a bluesy, gospel feel to it that pulls at the heart and will bring you to tears with Billy's soul felt, smooth voice.
Overall, I feel that Little Bit of Everything is a solid southern tinged country album that I am sure will raise Billy Currington back to the top of the country music charts.
